This Is The Turning Point. Why Essential Oils, Why Now?

Posted · 8 Comments

This is a long and organic story, so please grab a tea or sit and allow yourself the time to read from start to finish. If you have any questions about why I am integrating my nutritional medicine practice with essential oils, this post should help answer some questions for you.

This may help you understand the why and where I have come in this journey to support you and for you to help support your own health or life also.

I grew up the child of a long-haired hippie in the bush in South Gippsland, Victoria.

A waft of patchouli told me my mother had passed, the smell of cloves always meant a tooth-ache was being soothed, dried lavender was stuffed into stockings and placed in our underwear and sock draws to keep them smelling lovely.

A walk through the natives in the back paddock with our arms open wide to skim the sapling branches would involve pinching tea-tree and young eucalypt leaves with our little fingers to release the natural oils so we could inhale the strong, sweet aroma.

Even as a young child Mother Nature played a role in healing and grounding my siblings and I. Anger was washed away by a crazy-fast run through the gums, or a bareback horse ride across the paddock and through the tea-tree down near the gully, and tears were washed away by cuddling the guinea pigs in the little cave the old scraggly lavender bush made in the herb garden.

As a teenager, embarrassing red spots around our faces were dabbed at night with tea-tree oil, (and a prayer), at 15, rosehip oil was patted along our cheekbones as we saw our Nanna, Dulcie do, to help ward off wrinkles that wouldn’t even have arrived as I write this now in my mid-thirties.

It’s fair to say that solutions, preventions and soothing routines were all approached from natures bounty as a child and this still applies now I have children of my own and live in the city.

There hasn’t been a day in my own adulthood that a make-up bag, bathroom cupboard, medicine cabinet or pantry hasn’t stocked a simple, pure essential oil.

Even though essential oils have been in my life for ever, in late 2015 and early 2016, a few events took place that led me to envelope these oils in an even more dedicated fashion and to make the decision to spread the value of them to you – my loved reader – and also to patients and the world at large.

#1. I was sent some high quality doTERRA oils in late 2015…

by a beautiful friend who had been using them for some time. She thought I may like them, simple as that. I began by diffusing the oils in my office while preparing for and recording my business webinars and calls.  Holly and Ruby became curious about the sweet-smelling vapour also, often coming into my office to turn the diffuser on and just sit in front of it for a while.

I found the oils uplifting and grounding for my Type-A ‘Office-Alice’ self.

Also, I’m a raving fan of hot showers either in the middle of the afternoon, or at night. I began diluting my gifted oils in coconut oil and massaging them into the skin after my showers and I began to sleep better.

I loved them so much I went back to my friend – who had originally gifted me with the oils – and bought a whole kit of them.

For myself.

When they arrived I got inspired, I went onto eBay and bought little ‘roller’ bottles and made Ruby and Holly their own little blended perfumes. One for school and kindy, and one for sleeping. It took 3 days of use before the girls would come up to me in the kitchen in the morning and say ‘we need our perfume Mum’.

So these little babes of mine had their own little intentional self-care practice created through us receiving these oils.

Lavender, peppermint, grapefruit, frankincense.

The little perfumes I made for the girls to wear each day. Made with fractioned coconut oil, frankincense, lavender, peppermint and grapefruit essential oils.

#2. I spent my first 50 hours in clinic as a nutritionist.

I met with patients and reviewing case studies for my Nutritional Medicine qualifications. I took classes with two incredible practitioners, herbalists, nutritionists and naturopaths. One in particular completing her Masters in Women’s Health. I both greatly respect and was incredibly inspired by these practitioners.

In every case study we worked on, lifestyle factors played a key role in the lack of wellness of a patient. Every single person who came in, presented with overwhelm, stress, anxiety or just generally, the curse of ‘busyness’. Physically, many with digestive distress, fermenting guts, auto-immune disease, sluggish metabolism, mood disorders, thyroid conditions and the like.

Nutrient supplements were indeed prescribed and recommended, however within all of these prescriptions was also herbal support in the form of tinctures, teas or oils. It was the first time learned that many essential oils were literally ‘Mother Nature’ miracles when it comes to supporting overall health, gut health and gut healing. And you already know how valuable I see gut health in our overall wellbeing.

On top of the nutritional and herbal supplements and oils, lifestyle changes were prescribed to these patients and in these case-studies. Self-care was a priority, because these patients had been doing the opposite – which had led them to dis-ease in the first place. And nothing changes if nothing changes.

I booked an aromatherapy massage in the clinic myself, and spent 30 minutes afterwards speaking to my aromatherapy practitioner Brodie, about her study, her work and her results with her patients. There is a reason why aromatherapy is an accredited modality and recognised for health insurance purposes for patients across Australia.

Self-care. Self-care. Self-care.

#3. I flew to Sydney in May 2016 for the Mindd Foundation International Forum.

Mindd Foundation helps practitioners and patients discover and implement effective treatments for Metabolic, Immunologic, Neurologic,Digestive, Developmental conditions that often affect the mind. Their focus is on paediatric disorders such as ADHD, Asthma, allergies, autism, chronic illness, depression, learning and language delay, and digestive and behavioural disorders. Research is showing that these children are coming from families with a history of “brain-immuno-gut disorders” triggered by toxins, malnutrition and infections.

I sat in a room of mostly mothers who have kids with some or multiple of these conditions above. I sat next to a woman who, when we got to talking, said to me (paraphrasing): ‘I used to be a lawyer in high-heels and suits who was considered to be the best partner in my firm. I travelled to NY on business once a quarter. Now, I have a 4 year old son with autism. I stopped everything… everything… to try to find out how to help him live a better life. That’s why I’m here. Last year I took what I learned at Mindd home with me and we now have a different son. He is so much better than he was. This information saved our lives and he continues to improve’.

I heard from integrative nutritionists, MD’s, psychiatrists, medical scientists, herbal medicine practitioners, chiropractors and so many more qualified professionals in the health industry and every one of them spoke about the benefits of a clean, anti-inflammatory diet, an intentional lifestyle and holistic medical approaches (while ‘yes’ still many incorporating ‘western’ medicine as needed, in conjunction – always –  with functional medicine from foods and plants – such as broths, essential oils, meditation and mindset.)

I learned about gut-health protocols that included pure, organic oregano oil, and auto-immune support practices that included pure frankincense oil, chamomile oil and lavender oil.

#4. Healing the ones I love.

I took this information home with me, ignited and inspired and called on my mother who has suffered (terribly) from the auto-immune disease rheumatoid arthritis for 40 years, and whose digestive tract is severely damaged from heavy cortisone medications and inflammatory foods.

I made her gelatin ‘gummies’ and added anti-microbial and anti-bacterial oregano oil. I made her a roller of her own with frankincense, oregano, peppermint and lavender, to roll over her swollen joints as part of her daily self-care ritual.

#4. The ‘Low-Tox Life’ message reached my home.

We threw out our toxic cleaning chemicals. There are so many reasons why, that it calls for another post in time, however let it be known I want to create a home environment for my kids that doesn’t involve them breathing in carcinogenic fumes whenever Mummy decides to clean.

What did I replace the cleaning products with? Simple natural (edible) solutions and yes, essential oils.

The crux.

As a nutritionist, I can’t possibly physically meet every person in Australia or the world that wants to have an appointment with me.

However I know that we can’t treat all our disease or dis-ease will pharmaceutical pills or even nutrients alone. We are not as well as we could be partly because we are not caring for ourselves first. Stress is present in over 80% of chronic, long-term disease.

The majority of my clients and readers all need to implement a self-care practice, (you and you and you and you) and I know this can be as simple as starting by rolling diluted lavender oil and frankincense on your temples. Or massaging your legs and arms and abdomen after a shower with a blend of calming or grounding oils.

I believe it all starts with an ‘intention’.

Like lacing up your sneakers for a walk or a run, the act of choosing the oil and preparing it is an intention of ‘I am caring for myself in this moment’. Whether this is rolling your little perfume like my girls, or my mum (the girls are for clarity and calm or emotional support, my mamma’s is a super-packed healing blend), or whether you’re massaging your own incredible body like I do of a night, or whether it’s using the oils as part of a functional medicine protocol, like I’m doing with some gut-health clients and also my mum.

These above are only some of the reasons I contacted my friend who had gifted me my oils and who I had bought my own kit through, and I said, ‘I want to share these with everyone. Show me how’.

And so I am, and she is, and we are.

I respect these oils, I respect the business – dōTERRA – that has created them and I trust them and their power. On so many levels.

I am a business woman, and I am a coach, and a healer, and a helper. But I am also a Mamma and a daughter and as I was gifted the value of these oils I also want to pay that forward to you.  Which is the reason I am working with the company who brought these oils to market, doTERRA, to share this opportunity and message with you.

I’m in.

I’m ALL in loves.

Trust that I am here sharing the value with you because I 100% believe in the power of adding these little bottles to your lives as part of your own self-care or healing practices.

Personal or Business Opportunity. It’s up to you.

I’ve done my research and believe me it has made me cry at times, such as when I learned  about doTERRA’s co-impact sourcing model and their concentration on sourcing oils sustainably and ethically from their indigenous, natural habitat globally.

My God, loves, THIS is what matters.

I believe in their vision whole-heartedly.

There’s two options for you in relation to using these oils as well. One is that you use them for personal purposes. And if this is you, then perfect. You are about to experience some amazing products that will bring real value to your self-care practice. If you email me directly at I can walk you through how to purchase them. You can purchase once or regularly, receive a 25% discount through me – and get your oils at wholesale prices – through me and have no obligation to buy again if you don’t feel like it (even though but I bet you do!)

The other option is that you join me and share the value of these oils with the wider world, pass the love on and also create financial opportunity for yourself.

If you decide that you want to work with me – partner with me – to share the value of these oils with others and grow your own financial income, then my door is always open. I am ready to welcome you and support you on your journey. It’s changing lives and these oils are a gift for many, many people. These oils are helping people discover natural remedies and non toxic solutions that actually work and are incredibly supportive.

This way of a business connecting with people, sharing an incredible product and also holding space for people to step into a new zone of financial opportunity is actually something I believe is going to grow and change the world and the way we buy the products we love.

To simplify the way the business opportunity works, we need to look at a typical product-based business for comparison. A typical product such as a cosmetics brand will create the product and then spend millions (tens of millions in a lot of cases) each year on sales, marketing and advertising.

Th way that dōTERRA works is that advocates like myself go out and there share the message because we believe in the products and those millions of dollars that are typically paid into sales, marketing and advertising in a traditional model, gets passed to you and me, because we become the ‘sales and marketing’ force.

Awesome right?

We are the ones that then get reimbursed for our work in sharing the message of the products.

All this has me going: YES.

One of the things I keep coming back to is this. The product is exceptional. If you want to use the oils personally, you get emotional and physical support, and you provide important value back to the farmers who need it. (see above videos and just you try not to lose it like I did.)

But then, if you want to also create financial opportunity for yourself with dōTERRA – and work with me – then you get to use the oils, have physical and emotional support for yourself through them plus create financial opportunity for yourself and your family plus share that value back to the farmers as well.

360 degree-value with an incredible product.

That’s unparalleled. That’s why I haven’t put my name to a business and product model yet, until now.

THIS picture above explains perfectly the love and dedication that dōTERRA has. This is Emily Wright, the Vice President at dōTERRA. dōTERRA is so much more than just an oil company.  And I am so thankful and proud that I get to be a part of something bigger than me. I love that I get to spread this message with you to the rest of the world.  If you want to be part of something bigger than yourself too – alongside me – please let me know by emailing me directly at or by joining this lovely newsletter list here and I’ll contact you back shortly so I can answer any questions you might have.

The business opportunity suits those passionate about wellness and natural remedies, health care professionals, health coaches, life coaches, bloggers, creatives, foodies, massage therapists, stay at home or work at home mums/dads, entrepreneurs and virtually anyone who has a growth mindset, a positive nature, willingness to get serious about serving yourself and others and a willingness to be seen and to work hard. There are lots of options.

The personal opportunity is for everyone.

This is the first time I am sharing such lengthy information in relation to my work with dōTERRA, and my WHY, however it wont be my last and I hope it inspires you in the direction that makes sense to you, whether that’s personal, professional, or a mixture of both.

p.p.s Thanks for reading all this way down, you’re awesome.

***You already know some of the ways we use these oils to heal, however the Nicholls gals (that’s us below) are also using the financial opportunity to serve others. Myself and my daughters Holly and Ruby want to expand our ability to donate to our favourite charity ‘One Girl‘.  One Girl is on a mission to educate 1 million girls in Africa. ‘Because it’s not okay with us that an 11 year old girl can be sold to a 55 year old man in the name of marriage. It’s not okay that a 12 year old girl is forced to sell herself in a brothel to earn money to survive. Stories like this that we hear each week are not inevitable. We CAN do something about it’.

Being able to work with doTERRA gives us the opportunity to contribute more greatly to this cause. When we educate girls we are educating generations.

And education changes everything.

These are some of the reasons I want to live a life where I can 'serve' others'. I want to feel freedom to expand my connection, I want to mirror to my children how grateful I am to have opportunity and show them how much we can give to others, and I want to take them with me on a journey of abundance. (p.s I want to take you too!)
