Bubba Rub – Baby-Calming Massage Balm

“With a butterfly kiss,
and a ladybug hug, sleep tight little one, like a bug in a rug.”

Sometimes I find that even after wishing away the final minutes to the kids bedtime because I am ‘done’ for the day, I lay on Ruby’s bed with her while Holly reads to us both (Yep, my 6yo reads to me at her bedtime) and I suddenly wish we had all night.

I think this is why I love rolling the girls oils over them before the final tuck in. I get more time to trace the outline of their little bodies and smell that sweet little clean skin smell.

I may even creep back in that one final time before I go to bed myself, just to stare. ‘I made that’.

If you have your own new littlie, or you know someone else who does, then this is a super simple recipe for a gentle and easy massage balm you can make for them (or keep for yourself).

You may find you love this sweet smelling balm so much you use it yourself. It’s wonderful for dry skin and night-time soothing.

Baby-Calming Massage Balm

Directions

  • In a heat-safe bowl in the microwave, double boiler over the stove, or a stainless steel jug over a low heat, melt the beeswax until liquid, then add the coconut until melted also.
  • Remove from heat.
Add in all the drops of essential oil and stir.
Pour the oil into a suitable container and allow to set.
Screw on the lid and store in a cool, dark place.

To use, rub the salve, warm up your fingers and press into the balm, give your little one a foot or back massage before bed. If they are experiencing gastric distress, the sweet fennel is a gentle tummy tamer.

Lavender is commonly used to calm.  Studies have shown that people who slept with lavender essential oil diffusing throughout the night reported sleeping 20% better than those with the placebo. In other study, those who smelled lavender before bed slept more soundly and brain scans showed an increase in slow-wave sleep which is the deep sleep in the cycle.

Hi. Is this baby calming massage balm safe for new born or would you decrease the number of drops for a new born?

  • Hey Sandy, I have personally used from one month with great results, as the amount ends up being so tiny (Literally a small smear on your fingertips). This recipe is already a conservative dilution and much more gentle and healthy than the newborn creams you will find in the Supermarket. I would advise a patch test – which we should with all newborn creams – and then when you work with your own babies body you will be able to gauge your results.
